Description

The Long Blondes - Appropriation (By Any Other Name)

Angular Recording Corporation is proud to present ‘Appropriation (By Any Other Name)’, the third single by Sheffield’s premier dilettante pop group, The Long Blondes. “Fuck Art, lets chart!” The Long Blondes cheer, thus heralding the exciting arrival of this thoroughly modern British five-piece. The Long Blondes are the latest in a line of distinctly original bands to be produced by Sheffield, a town renowned for its rich musical heritage. So naturally the band was thrilled when a chance encounter with Pulp’s former violinist, Russell Senior, resulted in him playing on the new single.

The dapper eccentric was coaxed away from his antique dealing business to lend his own brand of peculiarity to ‘Appropriation…’ Earlier this year, Russell was lead to a disused knife and fork factory in the shadows of Bramall Lane, a.k.a The Long Blondes’ studio. It came as no big surprise that Mr Senior’s off-kilter violin (and percussion) cameo teased out the songs tendency to sound like a lost gem off ‘His N’ Hers’! Having been fans of Pulp since they were knee-high to a bargain rail, the band couldn’t believe their luck. Ultimately, Russell’s involvement signals the handing over of Sheffield’s eccentro-pop crown to its rightful new owners.

But enough of all this celeb baiting, what about the song itself? ‘Appropriation…’ fuses the resigned sigh of ‘You Don’t Have To Say You Love Me’ with the hands-on-hips nonchalance of ‘Yes Sir, I Can Boogie’. It’s the kiss-off Kim Novak never gave James Stewart in Vertigo, re-set in a depressed Northern town, framed within exactly three minutes of new wave pop perfection.

‘Appropriation…’ had its UK debut in February 2005, courtesy of a Steve Lamacq session broadcast live on Radio One. Since then it’s fast become a live favourite, lovingly fashioned by our charity shop chic heroes and casually set on fire by the lovelorn defiance of lead singer Kate.
